It was a pleasure to welcome Old Twyfordian Guy and his wife Hannah back to School this week for a visit filled with memories and reflection. Having left Twyford in 1974, more than fifty years ago, Guy enjoyed the opportunity to revisit many of the places that shaped his childhood and school days.
As he toured the site, stories quickly came flooding back. He fondly remembered Noel Keble-Williams Geography classroom, complete with the famous ceiling map that fascinated generations of pupils. The conversation soon turned to life in Upper School, the infamous indented stone steps leading to it, the untouched original wooden lockers that still stand in the hall and the much-feared 'tardi' slate, a feature that many OTs will remember all too well.
Like so many former pupils, Guy's happiest memories were often those beyond the classroom. He recalled one particularly memorable snowy day when the athletic pitches became the scene of an epic series of snowball fights, as well as the obstacle courses that were regularly set up behind the hedge bordering the playing fields, and trips to swim in the River Itchen at weekends.
As he walked around the grounds, it was clear that while much has changed over the years, the spirit of Twyford remains remarkably familiar. The visit was a wonderful reminder that some memories are uniquely shared by Old Twyfordians, connecting generations through experiences, places and stories that continue to endure long after leaving the school gates.
We were delighted to welcome Guy back to Twyford and thank him for sharing so many wonderful recollections of his time here.
