We are delighted to congratulate James Christie, Twyford’s former Head of English, on the publication of his memoir, 'Where Will the Laughter Come From?' A captivating reflection on his long career as an English and Drama teacher in the world of prep schools.
“As retirement loomed towards the end of a lengthy teaching career, twenty‑eight years of it at Twyford, I began to wonder where the laughter would come from once I’d left the classroom. Hence the title of this memoir.
In writing it, I’ve tried to capture the eccentricities of the prep school world as it once was, as well as the gradual (and much‑needed) modernisation that followed. Above all, I wanted to preserve the humour that, for me, was an inseparable part of life in the classroom.
Thankfully, while much has changed over the decades, one thing remains constant: there is still laughter in the classroom. Long may it continue.
My twenty‑eight years at Twyford have left me certain of one thing: laughter is the best teacher.”
James’s book is available from the publishers, Mereo Books, as well as from Amazon and other online retailers.
For those who prefer the pleasure of a traditional bookshop, it can also be found at P & G Wells, College Street, Winchester.
