We were lucky to welcome back Old Twyfordian, Giles Goford, this week to speak to the top three years of the school about his fascinating career in sports journalism and his exciting new book, ‘Head for the Floodlights: Around the 92 in the 1980s’.
Giles attended Twyford between 1982 and 1985. During a tour, the memories of his time here were impressive. He shared amazingly detailed anecdotes of boarding, sporting events, court cricket and his busy everyday life in the prep school including his first ever attempt at journalism, inspired by the School, with the creation of the first Twyford magazine for pupils.
Giles went on to be a successful sports journalist, with a huge passion for football. He produced the talkSPORT Breakfast show and is now Commissioning Executive at BBC Sport. Following an article, he wrote for BBC Sport about his love of football and the journey he went on with his father to visit every 92 football league grounds in the UK, he recently published his first book documenting the journey.
The children enjoyed an insight into this and asked many questions about his favourite football ground, biggest change he has seen in the game over the years and who his favourite sports personality he has worked with is (he is in F1!) A big thank you to Giles for taking the time to visit us.
