There are school traditions… and then there’s Court Cricket. The wonderfully fun, fiercely loved game that has echoed through Twyford’s grounds for nearly two centuries.
Played against the iconic Court Wall, now the back of the WW1 Memorial Library, with two sets of stumps fixed proudly in place, the game has always had just one glorious rule - slog it as hard as you can onto the firsts pitch, over the pavilion and beyond.
It’s pure Twyford magic.
The archives tell us that as far back as the 1850s, “cricket was played, both officially and as a court game" a charming reminder that generations of Twyfordians have stood exactly where today’s pupils stand.
Last week, that history came roaring back to life as we welcomed back some of our Old Twyfordian professional cricketers for an evening dedicated to our most beloved tradition.
Jimmy Adams (1994), Joe Weatherley (2010), Felix Organ (2012), Dom Kelly (2019) and Hampshire bowler, and current Pre‑Prep parent, Chris Wood all returned to join the fun, generously giving up their time to take part in a high‑energy showdown between Years 6, 7 and 8 and an enthusiastic team of parents.
Hugely excited children arrived clutching their freshly taped SSTBs, each one hoping to claim the ultimate bragging right: getting a pro out. The competition was fierce, the laughter constant, and the joy of parents sharing in their children’s favourite school pastime made the evening feel truly special.
Court Cricket is not just a game; it’s a legacy that connects generations of Twyfordians.
We send our brilliant OT professionals our very best wishes for a fantastic season ahead this Summer.
